How do you get to Rome with your children?

There are several ways to come to Rome: the plane will remain the simplest and fastest way. You can also come by bus, train or even by car for the more adventurous.

Coming to Rome by plane

If you choose the plane you will have the choice between two airports: Fiumicino and Ciampino.

If you arrive at Fiumicino airport, located 32 km from the city centre, you can reach the city centre in 45 minutes by shuttle bus for 11 euros per person. Alternatively, there is the Leonardo Express train, departing every 30 minutes, for 14 euros per person (free for children under 4 years old) or regional trains to Rome Termini station, the most frequent arrival point from the airport, or Rome Tiburtina station. Many companies also offer buses to reach the centre.

If you arrive at Ciampino airport, which is only 12 km from the city centre, you can reach the centre of Rome in 40 minutes with a direct bus. Rome’s airport is often served by low-cost airlines, so if you are flying from France: Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux or Paris you will certainly arrive at this airport.

Just like the Fiumicino airport, you can choose a shuttle bus from Ciampino only for 5 euros per person (bookable online) that will take you to Termini station. You can also take the Cotral bus and then the metro line A at the Anagnina metro station in the direction of Rome centre.

Taxi services are available for both Rome airports. At Fiumicino Airport (Lénardo Da Vinci) you can take a taxi from Terminals 1, 2 and 3, costing about 50 euros. At Ciampio airport the taxi service charges an extra fee for each additional piece of luggage, about 30 euros excluding luggage.

For families, the airport has baby services and children’s areas to make waiting more pleasant, and luggage trolleys with baby seats.

Coming to Rome by train

Coming by train to Rome is possible from France with the international trains or from Italy with the regional trains. You can reach Rome’s central station Termini from Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Florence, Venice or Naples. The monumental station, inaugurated in 1950, is located in the modern part of Rome. It is also Rome’s main national and international bus station. Once you arrive, you can take the two main metro lines directly.

The main disadvantage of this mode of transport is the journey time. There is no direct train from Lyon, Marseille and Nice to Rome, so your train journey will be longer with several connections, count between 8:30 and 17 hours of travel time, depending on your point of departure.

However, if you come to Rome from other Italian cities: Florence, Venice or Naples, you have the possibility between three types of trains. The frecce, the fastest trains, the most expensive, the intercity equivalent to the Intercités here in France, cheaper than the frecce, then the regional trains which are slower but still the cheapest of the other trains.

Coming to Rome by bus

If you decide to come to Rome by bus, the main advantage is the price, which is the cheapest among all the other choices, in addition to the flexibility of the timetables, …As for the trains the disadvantage of the bus is the journey time. The journey time from Lyon to Rome is about 14h20.

Many bus companies offer this trip and reach the national and international Rome Termini station from Lyon: FlixBus, BlaBlaCar or Marino.

Coming to Rome by car

The advantage of going to Rome by car is that you can stop wherever you want and it will cost you less than if you take the plane or train. However it is quite complicated to park in Rome so you should choose a neighborhood with a parking lot nearby.

Be careful: there are some areas where vehicles are not allowed, you run the risk of getting a fine.
