How to declare your babysitter?

declare babysitter

You have decided to take the plunge. You’ve decided to hire a babysitter, but you don’t know if and how you should declare her. Don’t worry, Marypop explains why, how and what interest you have in declaring your next babysitter.

First of all, you should know that if you hire a babysitter, even for just one hour a year, she immediately becomes your employee. This means that she works for you and that you are legally obliged to declare her. Don’t panic, if you are lost in the administrative procedures or if you don’t know the French system, you should know that declaring your babysitter is not very complicated and can allow you to benefit from some interesting subsidies.

Why declare my babysitter?

When you think of hiring a babysitter, you immediately think of your little neighbour, a high school student, who can look after your children on Friday evenings during your Zumba class for a few euros an hour. Even if this idea may be attractive at first glance, this solution deprives you of many social benefits.

  • Being in accordance with the law

And yes! Even if the idea seemed interesting, employing someone without prior declaration is illegal and carries legal sanctions. And as a little extra, the minimum age to be able to work normally in France is 16 (conditionally from 14/15 years old).

  • Being insured

Because no one is safe from a small accident, declaring the person who looks after your children allows you to be covered. Indeed, if an accident occurs during working hours, the insurance will be able to cover various expenses such as hospital costs.

  • Reassurance

By using a registered babysitter, you are more likely to find someone you can trust, who is experienced and will be able to provide your children with everything they need in your absence.

Use the CESU to declare your babysitter

The CESU or Chèque Emploi Service Universel will allow you to pay your babysitter while simplifying the procedures. The CESU was set up to help private employers who need services such as gardening, home cleaning and especially childcare.

Why use CESU?

As previously mentioned, the CESU allows you to simplify all your administrative procedures, but that’s not all:

  • You allow your babysitter to contribute to the various social security funds
  • You can call on your insurance if necessary
  • Membership is simple and quick, as are the declarations
  • You can deduct 50% of the amount of your babysitting expenses as a tax reduction or credit

How to use CESU?

Obtaining a chequebook is very simple. All you have to do is go to the website cesu.ursaf.fr to sign up. Once you have done this, you must declare the hours worked by your babysitter and the net amount of his or her salary each month. The charges will be automatically deducted from your bank account.

Is declaring your babysitter more expensive?

We’ve already seen how to simplify your procedures, but you may still be dubious about the benefits of declaring your babysitter? Well, you should know that by declaring your babysitter, you can benefit from some financial aid that may be worth it!

Please note that if your babysitter works on a regular basis, i.e. for more than 8 hours a week or for more than 4 consecutive weeks a year, you will be obliged to draw up a parent-employer employment contract. This document must include

  • the identity of both parties,
  • the date of employment,
  • the place of work (often your home),
  • the conditions of employment with the hours of work, days and details of the tasks performed…,
  • the duration of the trial period,
  • the remuneration.

Finally, the pre-financed CESU is offered by the employer, the mutual insurance company or any co-financing organisation. These vouchers can be used to pay your babysitter directly.

PAJE

The Prestation d’Accueil du Jeune Enfant (PAJE) is an aid that helps pay for certain expenses for children under 6 years of age. How does it work? It is very simple!

  • First of all, you have to declare your babysitter
  • You can reduce the cost thanks to certain aids such as the Caf
  • Finally, you can benefit from a 50% tax credit reduction on the cost of your babysitting
