Summer in Lyon with the family, with the children
Summer has arrived and with it, high temperatures. Would you like to enjoy the heat to cool down outside with your children?
Do you remember the last time you visited Lyon and its sights with your children? After such a period, what could be better than strolling around Lyon and rediscovering its charm and beauty as a family?
Lakes near Lyon
Grand Parc de Miribel Jonage
Located about ten kilometres from Lyon, on the banks of the Rhône, the Grand Parc de Miribel-Jonage is a site for rest and activities (and free!). Ideal place for a bike ride, have a picinc in the lawns at the water’s edge and a swim in its lake with the children. The closest to Lyon, it is accessible by bus (Bus 83 from the Laurent Bonnevay stop) or car (free parking).
Lake Aiguebelette
This lake is located in the department of Savoie, about 90km from Lyon which represents 1h15 of road. It is the third largest lake in France! Its splendid landscape and clean water make it the ideal place for a family day out in the summer. The warmest lake in Europe it reaches an average temperature of 26° Celsius in summer! Composed by 7 beaches, the entrance is paying for adults (2,50€) to enjoy this paradisiacal corner of nature near Lyon.
Lac des Sapins
Very complete in terms of activities that will delight young and old alike. Located about 65km from Lyon, or 1h15 by car, this lake is perfect to spend a pleasant day to entertain children. Playgrounds and picnic areas are set up around the lake, mini golf courses, a nautical base with boats, an accrobranche park, a Paint Ball, and of course a fishing area! There’s something for the whole family to enjoy: activities suitable for everyone!
Tête d’Or Park
In addition to the lakes for swimming near Lyon, we find in the heart of the city a green area of 117 hectares located in the 6th district which is the delight of Lyon’s inhabitants of all ages: from the youngest to the oldest, especially in summer. With its botanical garden, lake and zoological park (free and open to all!), the Parc de la Tête d’Or is a classic when it comes to good weather in Lyon. It’s the ideal place for a picnic with the family, games with the children or even for cycling. But this year, something new is coming to the park’s Velodrome: an ephemeral swimming pool!
The municipal swimming pools are open for this summer in Lyon
The news of summer 2020: the ephemeral swimming pool in the Parc de la Tête d’Or
The swimming pool of the Parc de la Tête d’Or is open since July 2, 2020! The area counts with 3 animation devices: two pools and a water play platform. 2 000 m² of beach will be fitted out offering spaces for reading, relaxation, games and shaded areas.
The Tony Bertrand Nautical Centre (formerly the “Rhône swimming pool”) and Duchère have been open since Thursday 2 July
Located at 8 Quai Claude Bernard in the 8th arrondissement, the nautical centre is composed of 3 pools: a south Olympic pool, a north pool for swimming and fun activities and a paddling pool.
The Duchère swimming pool, located at 4 avenue Andreï Sakharov in the 9th district, is composed of an educational pool, a 50m pool and a paddling pool and is accessible to people with disabilities.
The Gerland and Mermoz swimming pools are open since Friday, July 3rd
Located at 353 Avenue Jean Jaurès, in the 7th arrondissement, the Gerland swimming pool is composed of a 50m pool and a paddling pool.
The Mermoz swimming pool located in the 8th district of Lyon at 12 Place André Latarje is composed of a 25m pool, a play pool and a paddling pool.

IMPORTANT: Due to the current sanitary situation, the modalities to enjoy the municipal swimming pools are more restricted by limiting both the number of users and the time of access to the premises. Since June 29th, reservations are only available on the City of Lyon website for sessions of 2 hours at 2€ up to 2 times a week per person. Between each session, the site is cleaned and disinfected. They are open from Monday to Sunday, from 10am to 7.30pm. Moreover, access to the pools is reserved for Lyonnais (upon presentation of proof of residence).
Practical information
Extract from the municipal swimming pools by-law :
- Children under 6 years of age must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years of age who must declare his or her identity: legal parent or a person mandated by a signed parental authorization who can prove the identity of the child.
- Children between the ages of 6 and 12 must be accompanied by at least one parent or a person authorised by a signed parental authorisation who can prove the child’s identity.
- Children must be aware of the rules of procedure, especially unaccompanied minors over 12 years of age.
- Parents remain responsible for any act committed by their minor child even if they are not present.

Reminder of security measures in Lyon for this summer
To enjoy the high temperatures this summer, we remind you of the safety measures to be respected:
- Barrier gestures to implement: maintain minimum safety distances of 1 meter in public places.
- Wearing a mask is still compulsory on public transport.
- Use a hydroalcoholic solution regularly and avoid hugging and physical contact.
- If you have any symptoms: call your doctor as soon as possible.
- Download the #STOPCOVID portable application to detect those who are contaminated around you in any place (including strangers!), thanks to the application and to warn people you have contact with in case you get sick.
